Good afternoon,

I’m hailey and i come from a little town in vermont called jay. I’m majoring in dental hygiene and pre dental. To tell you about myself a little, i love doing outdoor activities, snowboarding and skiing especially. I really like playing basketball and field hockey but I’m not doing them during college. I’m a very social person but really dislike speaking in front of large groups so this is a little nerve wracking to me. In high school i was very busy with school work, sports, and working. My very first job was at a local country store as a cashier and also helping customers throughout the store if they needed help. I then started working at jay peak a local ski mountain, as a busser and waitress. These two jobs helped me encourage myself to talk to others in larger groups or even just in general. This past summer i started working at a local bank as a teller, for this job i had to go through two interviews with a bunch of people. I had to speak to them all about why i wanted this job, why i thought i would be good for this job, and how it could help the bank themselves for giving me the job. Honestly after finding out that i was going to have to speak in front of all the management and other people in the branch i thought twice about taking the job, but i just told myself that i needed to focus and if i wanted to make money then i needed to do what i was asked. With the field I’m going in now i really have to work on being able to talk to people and being able to comfortably talk to others in larger group settings. When i first realized dental hygiene had to have public speaking it defiantly gave me the chills, but also made me realize that it would help me. I feel that public speaking is going to make me step forward and out of the box too try to accomplish my fear of speaking publicly and to help persuade forward to my future. This only won’t help me in my future but also throughout college. Thank you for listening.

Throughout English 110 I’ve learned a lot about changing writing and adding different ideas into perspective. Learning different ways of putting writing in is a huge  difference than just knowing one way and that way may not be the way your capable of writing. As I started in Public Speaking having to write many speeches, or paragraphs to say in front of class it was a struggle. I didn’t think that I would be able to do well and keep up with good writing. But once I kept learning new things in English and kept up with learning new things and applying them, it helped me a lot with different types of writings in different classes. English has been a very elaborate and in depth of learning new writing techniques and applying them to various of different writings. Between the three essays that we had to do I think that the very first one was my most successful because I tried really hard to apply the different things that I had learning into the writing. After reading Steven Pinker’s essay it made me think about how I started my writing and how its improved over time. My very first essay this year was an example of bad writing. English 110 has helped me better academic writing because my professor has explained and we’ve read multiple things about how writings are good and how they can be bad. We’ve also read a couple of essays in our books about bad writing and we’ve looked at why they were bad, so whenever we looked at the bad writing parts we knew what to not put into our essays. Even though sometimes we may use words or sentences differently all writings are good. I think that most of my writings are good but not excellent. Good writers learn how to write by practicing and practicing and I think that if I keep practicing then I will become a better writing. Also my writing lab teacher has helped me get to this point. She has explained to me all the key points to a good writing paper and a bad writing paper.
